Zx10 throttle bodies, Gen 1

I've been looking more and more into doing the ZX10 throttle bodies lately. Does anyone have any feedback on them or experience? From what I read, we need 05-06 throttle bodies, pods and ported TB boots. They mount upside down, you have to switch the TPS wiring and use the stock Z injectors and harness.

I've already picked up new boots because mine were already looking crappy, but am waiting to put them on until I figure out if I should do this mod or not.

I already have the zx9 header, muzzy can, lightened flywheel, ignition advancer, pc3, a k&n filter and a chopped air box lid. Do you think I would see noticeable gains with the zx10 TB's? Anyone have a map for them?

BTW this is on an 03 Z.

Thanks,
Nick

if im not mistaken someone on ridersforums posted up dyno sheets showing 6 or 7 hp gains from zx10 tbs & pods. I have a copy of the map he was using as well.

Well for anyone interested, I researched a ton on this mod and have pretty much come up with this thread..
ZX10R throttle bodies

And to use this tune..
http://rapidshare.com/files/420163399/ZX10_throttle_bodies_by_Wideband.djm

I sourced a set of 06-07 zx10 TB's and picked up a new/used set of boots that I will open up a little with a dremil to make sure flow is not blocked anywhere.

I'm ordering a set of pod filters right now and then I should be good to go for the install. My only remaining question is about the secondary throttle blades. In the article above it says to remove them, which I'm fine with as I already have them out with the stock TB's. But what do I do with the accel pump settings for the PC3? Leave them how I had them before? I run the "race settings" currently.

Any input?

yeah I would run the race settings for the accel pump. ultimately getting it tuned would be the best bet. keep us posted.

What a pain in the *** this has panned out to be. Spent more time last night getting the air box out that I did to get the whole engine out of my old KZ650. I still need to disconnect the throttle cables and then the old TB's will be out. Need to swap injectors, and put my new boots on the motor. Should be smooth sailing after that.

I will be interested to see what you gain on this mod.

From what I'm reading people are getting close to 10hp out of it which is pretty crazy. Got the injectors switched over and the tb's on tonight. Started up fine, but I still need to adjust the TPS, load the correct map, get the filters on and zip tie some stuff out of the way. Should be able to take it for a ride tomorrow!

Well finally got it running. I had somewhat of a vacuum leak and forgot to plug in the air pressure sensor. I will say the pods sound AWESOME and cruising through town at low rpms I don't get the on off throttle or "gurgling" noises anymore.

Now the issues...
1. The map I have can't be right. If I just on it while riding it practically shuts off. I can ease it into upper RPM's and finally be able to go WOT, but it's pretty obvious it's running lean.
2. My throttle cable is loose due to one of the adjusters in the middle of the cable is frozen. I just have to fox that.

So I either have to find a new tune or man up and get it dyno'ed.

Man up and get it dynoed, I had similar issues when I converted a blown vortec 454 injection system. Had to end up taking it to a tuner and he knew his ****. I mean he was boarderline insane lol but it pulls like hell now.

I attached of the truck I helped build just for fun.

deff get it tuned and post up the results!

im interested, if we can already get perfect a/f ratios with stock TB's and on a stock motor, i dont see the reason to put zx-10 TB's on unless you have a motor that has been internaly changed, (more cc's)

i would love for you to prove me wrong though :eek:ccasion:

A little update.. I figured out the falling on it's face issue. I never adjusted the TPS voltage! It currently runs REALLY WELL and the pods sound INCREDIBLE. It's a tad lean after 9k on full throttle. When I feel it start to lose power I can back off the throttle just a tad (around 80% I'm assuming) and it gets better. I'm going to try adding a little bit of fuel after 9k on WOT and see what happens. In the end I'm probably going to get it tuned next year, but I'm doing what I can to avoid it. I'm even considering buying a wideband and just tuning it on the road, as I could use the wideband for my car also.

Either way, I would highly recommend this mod! Especially because it's real cheap to do. I bought the TB's for 85 bucks, the filters for 100 and (not needed) a new/used set of boots for 40.

Hey fellas. Haven't been on here for a while, but I figured since I just started riding regularly again I would provide an update. I never got it to run fully correct with the pods and zx10 throttle bodies. I kind of just let it go before winter. Well, I had my tank repainted, and figured while I had it off that I would replace my fuel pump. I bought one of the $30 ones from ebay.

When I took the old pump out, it had some crap in and around the strainer. The ebay pump fit great, and the only difference I can see is it's a tad louder.

First few rides out...HOLY ****! This bike has NEVER ran this well. I found myself accidently on the rev limiter in every gear. Every time. It's ridiculously fast. I road my friends 08 R1 with a flashtune and gearing and I'm positive if my Z isn't just as fast, it might be a tad faster (up to 130 or so, the R1 would probably pull after that into HIGH triple digits). These TB's, pods and a new fuel pump turned this bike into an absolute beast...and I think I have a total of 250 bucks into all of it, including new/used TB boots.

Forgot to add: First fill up for the first ride my mpg was at 28. Which is pretty much where it normally was even before the TB's when I wasn't taking highway trips, and just beating it through back roads. Second and third tank...I have a 40 mile commute to work, about half highway. I got 33 on both of those tanks, and it's not like I was cruising the speed limit down the highway.. I was in HIGH triple digits a few times and pretty much cruising around 90-100 the other time. I really don't think these have impacted fuel economy at all.

Are ZX-10 throttle bodies the same diameter as the Z's? I already have pod filters on mine I put on last winter. Was tempted to do this mod while I had the throttle bodies out but decided to just throw the stockers back in. That said if it's just a simple throttle body swap I might be interested in swapping to the 10' throttle bodies if they really make a big difference.

Riderforums has an amazing thread with everything you could think to ask already answered. I just did this mod this winter and referenced that thread at least 50 times lol. I believe the z's TBs are 38 and the zx10's are either 42mm or 43mm. Your pod filters could still probably be used and its the 06/07 zx10 TBs, there's more to it though its not just a direct bolt on.

Here you go: http://www.RiderForums.com/z1k-z750-performance-upgrades/55554-zx10r-throttle-bodies.html

What he ^^ said. It's only certain year throttle bodies, they are much bigger. You need to open up your stock TB boots to get the zx10 ones in there. You also have to run the z injectors, and swap a wire around for the TPS sensor. I'm not sure if the pods you have now would fit, it would probably be pretty tight.

The zx10 TB's mount upside down as well, and you need to do a lot of adjusting to get the throttle cabels correct.

Thanks for the info, I think this year I will just dyno tune it the way it is. There's always next winter:cool:
