Just purchase an integrated tail light from these guys--http://www.customled.com/products/integrators/2010_2011_Kawasaki_Z1000/2010_2011_kawasaki_z1000.htm-- as well as a license plate relocator kit. I am not very handy, but want to learn to work on my bike. I thought this would be a nice start, but I'm afraid I'll screw something up. Is this project doable, and are there any things I should be on the lookout for. Also, what tools will I need. 2013 z1000- gracias!

the project is quite simple, some wire splicing involved but as long as you take your time and pay attention you should not have any problems. in terms of tools, you will prolly need a screwdriver and allen wrenches, and i would recommend these -

3M SCOTCHLOK Quick Splice Wire Connector - Blue Gel - 14-18 AWG (Qty 1) 3M Accessories and Parts 804C

whatever brand they have atyour local hardware or auto parts store will do just fine. these will make your wire splicing for the taillight faster, easier and neater. and if you want to take it off you can and the wire isnt cut in half. i use them on almost all of my aftermarket wiring stuff.
and being able to work on your own bike will save u lots of money. like mounting tires for example, if you bring your bike in with the rims still on the bike you will end up paying close to double what you would pay if you take the rims off yourself and bring them to the shop for a simple tire mounting

you need to buy a repair manual. There are many available online and maybe download the file and take it to a copy place so they can a professional book for you with a binder. Start to read read and read. I suggest you read before doing the light

2013 model Id be scared to touch it as well. That is why i am not going to tell you how to do it. I am shocked that a model that new wouldnt already have a tail light assembly that you are looking for. What i mean is that the 2003 model is ten years old. So we are continuously making it look more modern with LEDS, tail lights, HIDs, etc. I figured with a bike as new as a 2013 the engineers would be more advanced and could make a bike more modern. After all that is what we all want. Get your book soon.
