Chain tensioner slip?

Just out of curiosity if anyone has had their chain tensioners slip yet? (Centric axle nuts)

Just did a new rear tire took it out for a little shake down went to hop the clutch in 3rd gear, acted like the front was gonna come up and then felt as if the rear tire slipped and bounced around. Heard the chain slapping around and felt like the bike was tracking funny. Pulled over and sure as **** the left side tensioner spun. Re adjusted and got to the gas station, tried it again leaving and spun again. Havent done it since pretty curious as if this is something anyone else has experienced as this is a major safety concern. Who knows if it wont just loosen up after normal riding after say 2 weeks...

-Readers Digest-
-Banged clutch in 3rd gear
-left side chain adjuster loosened up
-re-adjust and tighten
-happened again
-curious as if anyone has had this happen and if it will happen over normal riding

--FYI if you have a comment about attempting wheelies I dont care for it so keep it to yourself. I am hard on my bikes, always have been, wont change.

**This is a genuine safety concern as this shouldnt happen no matter how hard or gently you ride your motorcycle. And yes I am positive they were torqued down, Ive done this for a living, Im not an idiot.

I haven't had that happen to mine. but maybe the adjuster got stripped out a little when you changed out the new tire or maybe the just didn't have the adjusters set up right. It could have been to tight making to much strain on the chain and well the weak spot gave allowing the adjuster to move.

If you're using the allen wrench that comes with the tool kit you'll never get enough torque on the clamp bolts. Those bolts need to be tight. The service manual calls out 47 ft/lb. No way you'll get that with a 6" long allen wrench.

interesting because I used both my 3/8" ratchet as well as the allen key and I can assure you I got it just as tight with both methods. Trust me they arent loose by any means, I would venture as far as to say they are over tight haha

I am slightly less concerned that Im not the only one but that also makes me a little more curious that Im not the only one who has experienced it.
When I did get home I did loosed everything back up and made double sure my axle was lined up perfect and retightened the whole 9yards, I even didnt since the axle down as tight as I had it because when I initially broke it loose I didnt find it near as tight as anticipated.

Beat it a little coming home today, didnt hop the clutch yet, maybe tomorrow or friday when I have the day off.

Anyone else please give input or your experience because I dont want to have to go back to the dealer and say hurtful things...

I had the same setup on my 92 zephyr 750 and never had a problem or on my 2010 Z1000. Maybe you got some grease or something on it to make it slip. Did you get the axle tight?

that's a lot of torque on the fasteners. I torque bolts all of the time at my work and they are only in/lb for most of them. I'm going to look at my manual and see what it says. That might be the right torque.
But one thing i know your not going to get that with a 3/8" ratchet. It just doesn't have that high of a torque value to put on a 8" ratchet not unless your super strong.

I agree. That's why I mentioned not trying it with the tool kit allen wrenches or for that matter a short ratchet. I doubt you can get there since the clamp bolts would require a 94 lb pull on a 6" long wrench. Good luck with that.

But those are the specs spelled out in the factory service manual. I thought maybe it was a misprint so I checked the specs for a 10mm bolt. 10mm, grade 10.9 torque spec is 47 ft/lb by every table I could find so I believe the FSM is correct.

The axle torque doesn't seem excessive given the size of the part.

Ive not had any problems that you describe. I am a pretty aggressive rider.

Thanks JSharp.

If anyone is still interested, ripped 2nd gear on my way home, nothin to brag about, but didnt have any odd feeling, no loosening of the tensioners. May give 3rd a go again tomorrow. This was after about 15mins of riding in ~80* weather, starting to think temp/riding time had a play on my mishap (I.E. metal parts not expanded)

yes after the second time I loosened everything up, re-aligned it and re-tightened everything. Key factor I think was bike was stone cold, had been sitting in the garage all day and didnt get over ~75* that day

All those parts fit pretty close, they might be worse when it's cold. It makes you wonder if something wasn't bound up and you fixed it by straitening out the alignment.

When I got my bike the adjusters weren't aligned. So much for dealer setup...

They can just sell me mine in the crate.
