Rob took his out a couple of years back when he kept having problems with 3rd jumping out.... He took the engine out, turned it upside down and did it that way.... So technically split the engine but kept the top end intact....

yes, you flip it upside down so that your crank doesn't fall out, since splitting the case is the equivalent to removing the main bearing/caps on a car engine.
