They're cool looking. The seat is a good inch or two higher than the Z. I've heard that the KTM V-Twins are vibrators though, so don't expect it to be anywhere near as smooth as the Z.

They look cool, sound cool, ride cool - they are just BADASSS Naked bikes - but the price and maintenance schedule scared me off. Why pay 50% more for a bike than I did for the Z?? And, while I loved the sound...I wasnt sure I could get used to the vibrations from the v-twin motor...or the compression braking for that matter...

They have even more engine braking than the Z??? Wow. I thought the Z had a lot!!

But yeah, the maintenance on the KTM motors is a PITA. I have two of their 525 motors in quads and they're work... two oil filters and two removable screens, and 10-hour oil changes. Yikes. Basically one trip to the dunes and you change the oil. Most people go 2-3 changes on the filters though.

Thats an awesome looking bike! But like most people have said you have to pay to play on that bike. Dont be scared of the vibes concerning V-twins. I came to the Z1K from a buell which had the vtwin feel at stoplights but one you get going it had less vibes the a 600 supersport. Best advice is to go ride one first!

There's actually a comparison article out there between the Ducati Streetfighter, new Z1000, and KTM Duke. Read that if you want more information. From what I've read, I think the new Z1000 is a better bike than the Duke.

As far as engine braking goes, I don't know about the old Z1000s, but the new one is nothing compared to the Buell I had. I can downshift the Z without blipping the throttle when coming to a stop, but I had to blip on every downshift on my Buell. I much prefer the less-intrusive engine braking of the Z.

And as far as vibrations go, the Z is far smoother than my Buell was. The Z is the smoothest bike I've been on.

Skip the KTM. I had one for a weekend demo. It's not smooth from a fuel injection standpoint (even after the latest revision mapping) and it's not a twin you can lug at low RPM unless you hate your fillings.

It's a solid bike from a handling/stopping standpoint but the motor is bad at low end power and not much for top end pull. To me, you have to be one of the other. It's neither.
