i love cheep mods, most of my stuff is not top shelf [ except my stainless 4-1 muzzy]. i got it on a close out for 425 bucks shipped. if i had lots of money i would buy top shelf for sure.
i also like mods that i have to modify to fit my bike cuzz it is fun .
1. bar end mirrors 60 bucks. to use my stock bar end weights it took a little finagling.
2. front and rear mini turn signals under 20 dollars a set of 2
3. rear sets, i am not going to spend 400 bucks plus for fancy rear sets as much as i would like them. i made a left rear set out of 1/4 inch plate . drilled holes in it and polished it. on the right side i cut off the passenger peg above the muffler mount. maybe not the coolest mod but i will never have a person on the back of my bike. took off 8 LBS and it cleaned up the rear of the bike.
4.trimmed down the top and bottem of the radiator covers. i like the minimal look.
5. i did buy a quality finder eliminator kit 130 bucks] it was the only one i found at the time. a 6 year old bike is already hard to get some parts. if i could have found a cheep one i would have bought it.
i have no further mods in mind. the bike runs so good i want to just maintain it and ride.

So post some close up pics of the mods youve made! I would love to see them!

As for finding parts for a 6 year old bike - shouldnt be that hard. I used to have a 1996 ZX7RR - one of 350 imported to the US, and I had no problems finding parts for it. Then again, they sold a hell of a lot more ZX7Rs than they ever made of the 2003-2006 Z1000...maybe thats why?? Also, remember that a lot of the stock parts from the 03 Ninja 636 also bolt right on to the Z1000.

I'm going to do the airbox mod this winter. That is, if I can't figure out some way to make a ram air for it. Doubtful, but I'm gonna look at it. Instead of painting it, to the tune of $1,000+ bucks, I'm getting custom made and printed vinyl to change the look for under $350. That's pretty cheap considering.

All the other stuff I'm doing before spring is expensive though. Ohlins valves and springs for the forks, silicone coolant hoses, braided brake lines and if I have enough money left Ohlins shock, rearsets, bars, grips, mirrors, keyless gas cap and engine protector.

Oh, and I got my titanium muzzy system on clearance from muzzy as well. $550 shipped for a $1200 system.

being a life time auto mechanic i am ashamed of myself for not doing the air box mod. but my rule is if it runs good do not F with it. i do not have or want a PC. my bike gets 40 MPG and the fueling is spot on so i will sacrfice 4 HP.

What exactly is this "airbox mod"?
The airbox mod is pretty much just opening up the top of the airbox to improve airflow. I don't know if it would even make any difference whatsoever. There are step by step instructions on other forums, but it's pretty much cutting the top of the airbox off, but retaining the standard filter.

Like two posts up said though, if the bike runs fine without it you might not want to mess with it. I just like to tinker with stuff. The only reason I got a PCIII was because of the Muzzy system, otherwise you'll gain almost nothing by using one.

Here are some of the cheaper mods on my bike. I've singled out the ones that made the biggest impact on my riding experience.
Windscreen ~$60
Stainless Lines ~$100
Aftermarket Handlebars - I've got Rizoma, but I think you can do Renthal and others for about 60.

How do you like the Rizoma bars? Are they lower than the stock ones (if that makes any sense)? I've thought about getting those. Looked at Renthal and LSL too, but I have a problem with buying something online. I want to sit, on my own bike, and hold the bars by the risers so I can get a "feel" for what I'll be getting. I just can't tell from pictures, or the rise and blah blah numbers, what the bar actually IS.:(

The Rizoma bars are the same position as the oem bars. They just eased the vibration a lot.

I have less vibration running the Rizoma bars with no bar ends than I did with the OEM bars and giant barends.

I'm waiting until I decide for sure on the mirrors before ordering the new bar ends.

Thanks, that's good to know. I was looking at all the Rizoma stuff, bars, barends, grips and mirrors. They look sweet. Expensive, but I'd hope you get what you're paying for. They make cool case savers and rearsets too.

I went from the OEM bar to a Renthal. I forget what model it was but it had the closest dimensions to the factory bar that they offered. The biggest difference was the pull back which was 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch more on the Renthal. The bar was ok but it made steering feel a little sluggish in the twisties-IMO. I switched to the Rizoma bar and steering feels alive and responsive again. The Rizoma bar also allows you to remove the two bar shims that are under the clamp. You won't believe how heavy the OEM bar is.. it feels like it's filled with lead. PJs parts is the place for Rizoma stuff they are a pleasure to deal with.

I put some cheap mods on my Z,d after a lil slide down the r.d.
  • Fat Bars & oversize clamps
  • Shorty Levers (Cheap chinese but look and feel the same as big $$ ones)
  • Aftermarket generic mirrors (the bars are too wide to put bar end mirrors)
Im just in the process if getting a belly pan & seat cowl painted that i scored pretty cheap.

id like braided lines in a translucent red with gold banjo's next.

PCv, bcm filter, took away off idle burble sent fuel milage in the toilet. went back to stock map til full muzzy came. put in new map with exhaust running rich. but hold on. 2nd gear now feels like 1st used to. wow. weather hasn't been cooperating here. snow, snow, snow, supposed to get more today. then 60's bythe weekend. have mirror extenders haven't installed yet. elimanator installed. 1 front tire 2 rear tires 5500 miles.:screwy::screwy::screwy: oh yeah, no noticable gain with PCv and filter.
