I'm trying to decide between these two bikes and these are my plans any advice would be appreciated.

1. I drive 45miles round trip from work, and I have lower back plus neck issues and i'm 5.10 wanting to keep as much wind off me as possible.
2.want to be able to hit the twisties and feel somewhat confident in the bike also plan on doing probably two track days a year maybe more.
3. want it to be reliable and cheap on maintenance. (I currently have a KTM 990 and it always has issues every 6 months since ive hit 15k now has 20k and has numerous problems so wanting to get a new bike!)
4. hoping for somewhat descent mpg

If anyone can give me some tips would be awesome thank you so much!
Also I live in California if anyone knows how much I should be paying out the door for one.

ninja 1000 will be a fine choice. has a little more wind protection than the fz1. no problems ripping up twistys. the thing has great low end torque.

For me I am jumping up from a zzr 600, so my mpg went down a little, but still better than my pick up. The fuel tank is 4 gallons vs to the 4.8 Im used to.

seems to me the ninja will be your next ride. good luck in your purchase.

Well, for starters, the FZ1 is more comparable to the Z1000 than the Ninja 1000...it is a naked bike. So, the Ninja will definitely provide more wind protection than the FZ will. That said, this month's Cycle World mag tested the FZ1 against the Z1000 and the Speed Triple - and the Z1000 kicked the other two's asses! The FZ was in last place.

So looks like the Ninja is the best bet for you!

My commute is also about 47 miles round trip. On the Z1000 (2010) I get 2.5 trips before I need to fill up (Ive tested it before, and can squeeze out 3 round trips - but thats babying the throttle and pushing my luck with the reserve tank!) I take it in the twisties - and routinely smoke 600cc GSXRs and Ninjas for fun. It is reliable and cheap on maintenance (only have done the recommended services - and added some aftermarket parts...)

Man, I love the looks of those KTM Duke 990's....but didnt realize the reliability was such a problem!

My friend has a 07 fz1 yamaha with slip on's. pc3 and down 1 on front sprock. I have stock 2010 Z1000 AND roll on in any gear the Z will smoke the FZ1. The FZ1 just feels flat in the lower riv range. I think the Ninja 1000 will be the smat choice. P.S Plus wheelys are free :D:eek::headshake::lol::welcome:

2011 Ninja for sure over the FZ1 in my opinion. The low end torque, fairing, and comfort is what I really like. You don't even have to take the fairing off to do oil changes which is nice. I also like dual exhausts. I hate the single sided exhausts, they look off balance. I researched for 6 months before purchasing my Ninja, I sat on and test rode several FZ1s. 1 minute after sitting on the Ninja, I was sold before I even test rode it. I'm 6ft, about 195lbs, fits me perfect, no regrets at all except for the stock seat (which has been replaced).

I'll be holding on to this bike until the wheels fall off. I just love riding it. I get a little smirk on my face everytime I roll-on the throttle!!! There just isn't anything else on the market that has it's style, comfort, torque, and upright riding position. The only other bike I want now is a cruiser of some kind so my girl can ride in comfort.

the FZ1 is not a naked bike in my book, it has a lot of plastic up front.
Ninja 1000 is not a naked either, and the new Z1000 has plenty of extra plastics as well. :2cents:
