It did the same thing to my buds 2010. The oil light would not go out. You should fill the oil filter with oil before installing the filter. It is not the burping. The pump is not able to fill the empty oil filter. My friend started his bike 3 times for about 10 seconds and it still did not prime.

I didn't prefill my filter; I don't on any filter that has to be mounted horizontally because it makes a mess. Maybe I was lucky. I'll find out again in 939 miles when I do the 1500 mile oil change to switchover to synthetic.

fyi, my light came on so i cranked it and loosened up the filter until it "burped" then tightened it back up and it resolved the issue. this is my 3rd or 4th oil change but the first time ive had to do this.

that's some good info about the oil change and putting some oil in the filter. I guess he engine on the z get's air locked if you don't put some oil in the filter. I'll make sure i remember that the next time i have to change the oil in my bike.

I also partially fill the filter before screwing it on.
Never had a problem, well, I've only changed the oil twice.

you should never "NEED" to "pre-fill" or "prime" an oil filter. At most they recommend putting oil on the gasket to prevent it binding or anything. I worked on cars for a living last 2 years of my life (Nissans, horizontal mounted filter). Theres something wrong and you should address Kawasaki with the issue. Enough complaints maybe they'll do a recall or fix their problems.
Havent had it happen on mine yet

This problem has been around forever on certain Kawasaki engines. The pump sometimes air locks after an oil and filter change.

Some people 'burp' the filter after a change to bleed the air, others fill the filter partially, and some of us refill the engine with oil before we remove the filter and fill the filter partially.

It's really a non-problem and nothing Mama Kaw is going to do anything about since they are so many ways to avoid it. Just don't keep running the engine with no oil pressure in the hope it will finally come up. It might eventually or it may not, but your bearing will hate you in any case.

I have changed the oil every 2000 miles on my Z1k since I have owned it. I have used all kinds of oils (CAT 15/40 DEO, Pennzoil 10/40, CAT 10/30 ULS, KawaChem 20/50, and prolly a few others.... Some of them were motorcycle oils, and most were not. I use a Fram PH7317 oil filter you can pick up at a WAL-MART (its $4, its orange, and matches the bike!) Never have I had this problem with the oil light..... I think ya'll are making it up, lol!

Okay, I've now changed my oil and oil filter 3 times. I still "pre-fill" my filter about 2/3 full, then wait about 5 minutes before I install it on the engine. By the time I am ready to screw the filter on, the oil has soaked into the oil filter. No mess, no waiting for more than maybe 3 seconds for the light to go out. I have never had any knocking.
