Hello all,

I got a 2003 Z1000 about a year ago with 2,500 miles on it. In the past year I put about 7,000 miles on it with little problem.

But recently is started to hesitate at highway speeds, feeling like it was running out of gas. I can't guarantee it, but it seems like when I filled the tank up, or possibly just opened the tank, that the situation would improve.

I took it to a shop, explained the issue, and they told me they couldn't find anything wrong with it. They did say they drained the tank and cleaned the lines, and recommended gum-out.
Riding home from the shop, I hot about 50MPH and it started to happen again. This time it seemed like any time I went above about 5500RPM it would happen. I pulled over once, opened and closed the tank, and just revved the engine to about 8000RPM, and in a few seconds it started to sputter and dropped down to about 2000RPM on it's own (throttle was still at same position that had been 8,000RPM).

I don't really want to go back to the shop and might try to go it on my own. Any advice on where to start?

I would check connections on the coils. if you can, check fuel pressure if its low or dropping when it happens fuel pump may be on the way out or the fuel filter is restricted. Hard diagnosing things without being there

Did you happen to solve this issue? I am having a similar issue and am trying not to create a new thread

Could be a fuel vent thing could also be a bad coil, does the tank have a lot of pressure when you open it? I’d pull the tank off, make sure everything is straight with it, and start testing coils. Sometimes a cracked coil gets worse as the bike heats up and the electronic interference is intermittent.

Also a bad regulator can make some weird things happen

when you ask about tank pressure you mean the gas vent? No it does not make any noise when I open fuel cap.

I’m going to be ordering a service manual so I can perform the tests y’all suggested

here is the link to the service manuals if you have not already found it. has the fuel tank been removed recently? i believe the fuel line routing from the tank to the throttle bodies is very specific. might want to make sure it’s routed correctly. routes from front to back i believe and can get slightly pinched and when it gets hot it gets worse. there is a thread about it on the forum somewhere.

Get the manual free from the geersgonewild link.

Like you described in the other old thread, i had similar issues on a er-6n once. Once the bike got up to temp, it kept stalling idleing, or when riding on low rpm. When i kept the throttle on at higher rpm it seemed to run better. Aftward inspection turned up to be a cracked coil.

Checking a pinched fuel is the easy thing to check first, done that too when rebuilding my 2007 z1000
