Hi all. I going to have a look at a nice 2008 model with 40k km on the clock and an Akrapovic "race" exhaust tomorrow.
Any particular quirks or anything to look out for apart from all the normal used bike stuff?
I got an 08, 34k km, Akra full 4-1.
They're rock solid bikes. So apart from the normal used bike stuff, I will add a few things:
1. I just replaced the R/R on mine. Was the only thing to have failed on a 11yo bike so can't really complain.
2. Running stock tune, the full Akra system makes it pop and backfire a *lot*. Really need a dyno tune to fix this, however, removing or at least plugging the PAIR system improves this significantly. I would say 60-80% better.
3. Check the plastic trim pieces on either side just below the seat. Many have broken lugs if not removed with care.
4. Fitting a 190/55 (spec is 190/50) rear tyre improves everything. And the speedo is now accurate to about 2% instead of 8-10%
That's all I can think of right now. So how was the one you looked at?
Thanks mate. Excellent info.
I just looked at the bike last night, didnt really have the presence of mind to look at a lot of things, i wish i had seen this a day earlier.
Very nicely presented bike, looks like previous, previous owner was fastidious with service history up to 32k but but current owner hasnt done anything, due for 42k service.
Definitely pops and bangs and carries on, leads me to believe it is not dyno tuned as he says.
Overall impression is its a buttery smooth engine that pulls smooth from nothing, in a nimble chassis all though the tyres were old and hard so couldnt chuck it around anywhere near what i should. very slippery. Suspension not as bad as Id read, felt really good.
Good tip on the tyres. Tyres are the first thing I'll do, currently has a 180/55 on it which felt really nice, very nimble, how does a 190/55 compare to a 180/55?
So anyway I guess ill have to factor in price of tyres, 42k service, dynotune lol thats about $2k australian all together, not including RWC ,stamp duty, etc.
Yeah the engine is strong as an ox. Plus it's short geared so it'll pull from 3k in 6th without a hiccup. Some ppl go up a tooth on the front sprocket to calm things down a bit and stop looking for 7th lol.
If it's popping then def hasn't been tuned. Unfortunately Ivan's doesn't do a map for the Gen2, so if u want to save a bit of cash I suggest looking up "Disable PAIR system" on this forum. I did the simple version - didn't remove any components, just pulled an air hose and plugged both sides. Made things a lot more bearable and if you have small hands u can do it in about 10mins without taking the tank off.
Standard rear is 190/50, so if it has 180/55 it's usually because of price or availability. There's a lot of posts on here re changing to 190/55 and I highly recommend it. Felt like it tips in a bit quicker yet very stable while leaned over. Given the prevalence of speed cameras in Oz, the speedo correction alone makes it worthwhile.
All the best with it and don't forget to post up some pics if you do decide to buy it
Beautiful bike man! Ive spent all morning (and the last couple nights) pouring over the internet looking for a pic of one with the Givi rack and that is the 1st pic ive seen of one and it looks ace. Actually just bought the same set up this morning, best price i could get for the rack was from italy and a plate from germany.
So yes i did indeed get the bike two nights ago, 1st impression is it is indeed geared way too aggressive for my liking to the point 1st is useless but cant seem to get into 2nd from neutral, and 6th is fine for cruising 45kmh lol. Traffic seems to be flying past me when i stick to posted speeds and i lost my phone holder so no gps check for the moment. It goes like **** off a shanghai tho. Still havnt found the redline. Just came from a vtr1000f and on paper they are pretty much equal but this beast feels MUCH more potent. Could just be im not used to the riding position and dont trust the tyres 100%
Had a look under her skirts and she's running 15/42 gearing (and a 180/55 tyre) is that stock gearing?
Also it seems to have a tuning module with a Dynobike sticker under the seat (they are local dyno tuners) so i guess ill just plug the pair.
Might keep the tyres for a bit, pirreli diablo rosso corsa bla bla or something stamped 3 years ago. Very slippery at first as it seems old mate had never leaned the bike further than 5 degrees from vertical despite being world superbike racing champion back in ireland lol i **** you not ive never seen anything like it 60mm of 3 year old hard virgin rubber each side so after being scrubbed in now they arnt so bad.
I'll get pics up soon. Came with a puig screen. Got stock mirrors coming and still in the process of taking measurement for either a drag bar, swallow bend or some other kind of low bar.
Mate that bike looks amazing, especially in those colours with the stuff you have done. You wouldnt believe it but that is the only photo Ive seen so far of a gen2 z1000 with Givi rack and it looks the tits, thankyou for posting. I just bought that exact rack and plate before i saw this. After much trolling the best price i could get were a rack from Italy and the plate from Germany.
Yes the bike is popping but on further inspection it has a tuning module under the seat with a Dynobike sticker on it (local dynotuners) I might give them a call and see what the backstory is.
The tyres arent as bad as i thought. They have three year old time stamps, but the p/o had never leaned this bike over i **** you not there was 60mm of virgin rubber up the sides so it was slippery as hell but scrubbed in now not too bad. Pirrelli rosso corsa diablo blah blah something or other so they will do for now.
The gearing is a bit of an upset. 1st gear is almost useless and cant shift into 2nd from neutral, and 6th cruises comfortably at 40kmh lol. I lifted her skirts for a litttle peak and she's running 15/42. Is this stock?
I lost my phone holder so couldnt GPS it but was getting overtaken by traffic doing indicated speed limits.
So immediate mods apart from RWC are; the Givi rack, either ultra low, drag or swallow bars, stock mirrors, peel off all the stupid Monster stickers, a tank pad and knee grips, and a good old service.
Ok looks like my original post has not been okayed so ill try again.
1st of all, congrats , and thank you for posting the only pic of a 2nd gen with a Givi rack I have seen. It took me a couple nights to find a rack and a plate for a decent price but absolutely no pics, so after seeing yours I am truly well at ease that it looks awesome.
As to the tyres, they are not as bad as i thought. Pirelli Diablo something or other, stamped 3 years old , but the p/o had never leaned the bike over so there was 60mm of three year old hard v i r g i n rubber either side that was as slippery as death at first but is now scrubbed in and is fine.
The gearing is a bit extreme; 1st is useless, cant get into 2nd from neutral and can cruise happily 40kmh in 6th.
I had a look, ive got 15/42 gearing. Is this stock?
lost my phone holder so havnt had a chance to GPS test it. Traffic is definitely moving faster than me at indicated speeds though.
I feel like i could easily go 16/40 or more.
It turns out there is a tuning module under the seat with a "Dynobike" sticker on it. They are pretty local to me so might give them a call or take it over there to see what they can tell me about the bike. I think the PAIRS plug is definitely in order.
Apart from that and a good service and of course a RWC, ive got Renthal flat bars coming, some stock mirrors and will be peeling all the Monster stickers off and putting tank pads and grips on.

Looks like all ur posts got approved, and seems like u had to write everything up 3 times lol... feel sorry for ya. And will feel even more sorry for you after u hear this: I just sold my bike and the new owner didn't want the Givi rack (I'm keeping the plate & box) so he's taking it off and giving it back to me... I'm in Hong Kong and could've got my brother to bring it back for you next month for a small fee or a slab of beer haha! Oh well, seems this whole thread has been missed timing by a matter of a few days!! For your peace of mind, the Givi rack is rock solid and contours nicely with the rear curvature - much much better than the Venturi ones. I even used it to mount a pet carrier for my dog lol
Yeah, std gearing is 15/40, so at 42 rear it must be a wheelie maniac! A lot of folks put on a 16T front (std 40T rear) and seems to make it more like normal. I hadn't got around to that, as not a lot of freeway miles where I live here lol
Oh and mine had Rizoma bars and mirrors from the previous owner. Here's a few showing more details of the rack.
That is a very beautiful bike. You must be sad to sell. Are you buying another bike? Stay safe over there! Yeah just my luck with the GIVI lol, oh well.
I might take it down to get a road worthy test done today so i can work on legally riding it. I think it will be ok for the most part, but one thing that is strange is the high beam low beam on my headlights.
In that, the left light seems to be constant high beam with the engine on and the right light flashes low beam when triggering the controls. Is this something as simple as the two headlight plugs being mixed up or are the two beams that drastically out of aim?
Yeah I keep an SV650S in Syd for when I go back a few times a year, and mainly just take it to track days.
Really sad to sell the Z, but it was just too heavy and unwieldy for my here esp with the tight traffic and parking etc.
So I got another SV here to match my one back home haha! Seems it's the perfect size bike for me, really easy to ride and handle and just a great do-it-all bike. This one also came with a Givi rack (hence I kept the box and plate from the Z) as well as a host of goodies like Yoshi, Brembos, Ohlins shock, Scotts damper, Koso gauge etc. Figured since I got it cheap I might move some of those parts to my track bike in Syd.
I like the looks of these bikes but the Givi rack pictures make me shudder, they're putting the weight in the worst possible place, high and behind the rear axel. This can lead to bad handling of the bike.
I 100% agree with you, but unfortunately it's a necessary evil for me, for practical reasons of living in Hong Kong. I don't have a car and traffic congestion is high, so the ability to lane filter is of much more importance. Plus it's almost all commuting so high speed handling doesn't really come into it. For the times when I'm actually going for an enjoyable spin or when I don't need to carry anything, I take the box off. Can't feel that the rack is there at all.
Doesn't look as good, sure. But it's a Godsend for when you do need it...
You're not going to be racing with a loaded top box on though, and unlikely ever to have more than 10kg in there at the best of times. Plus saddles make it hard to lane split and navigate urban areas.
For actual sport touring, saddle, and tank bags for sure.
Kook, looks like you have done well with that SV.
