Wow... I'm not sure about the 2003 Z1K, but the 2010+ has an 11.8:1 compression ratio. In terms of gasoline-powered internal combustion engines -- that's on the high side! Especially considering (I'm fairly certain, someone correct me if wrong) these things don't have knock sensors to "tell" the ECU to pull timing and protect the motor when detonation occurs. As would happen running a lower-than-necessary octane fuel. I wouldn't feel safe running anything less than the 91 sold in SouthWestern states, or the 93 sold here in the SouthEast. Considering the 3rd gen only holds 4gal, we're talking maybe an extra dollar at most to fill with 91/93....why risk running the cheap stuff?

The Gen1 manual states minimum 87 octane fuel, which is what I've been running, with no ill affects to the motor and still avg 42 mpg
I also add Lucas oil ethonal fuel conditioner at 1oz/5gals maybe that has something to do with it Running well on lower octane fuel

Well there you go then.

An update on my fuel economy -- took it out with friends yesterday after a dyno session a couple weeks ago where I ran the motor up against the limiter. The bike did 35mpg this time. So hopefully the upward trend will continue as it breaks-in more!

Yesterday I rode for 2.5 hours straight. I filled before I left for the ride, and then filled right before coming home and parking it. I got 37 miles per gallon.
So its official, my 2011 Z1000 gets better fuel mileage than my 2011 4 cylinder Toyota Camry. The best I get with the Camry is 36.something miles per gallon.
I haven't raced my Camry against my Z1000, but the Z1000 feels a bit quicker. (sarcasm)

Is anyone even considering the fact that the speedometers read higher than a car does.. (unless you have the speedo healer). Therefore more miles are put on the clock than actually traveled.. So your fuel mileage is actually lower than you think it is..

oh an 93 octane FTMFW! there really is no point in running the lesser octane ratings. it cost what $1-2 more per fill up. and you have a much less chance of getting detonation/knock when the bike is hot and it is hot outside. especially if you are beating on it..

I have run nothing but 87-89 octane in 32,000 miles on my '03. It has never knocked once, lagged for power, or acted like it wanted to hesitate. Waste your 1 or 2 dollars if you would like; I'll keep mine in my pocket.
